[Mondrian] How should Mondrian get table and column statistics?

Mondrianites,

This week I have my head down (re-)implementing aggregate tables in mondrian-4. It gave me some ideas for how we could improve mondrian's statistics gathering. Rather than getting sidetracked into writing a bunch of new code before I knew whether it would be useful, I wrote up my thoughts in a blog post. Enjoy, and please make comments to the blog.
