I guess some of those DatabaseMetaData.supportsXxx methods would make it a
bit less work to implement a dialect. However, they don't exactly map onto
the characteristics we need, or capture the features/deficiencies of the
database. For example, DB2/400 gets pissed if you alias a column and DON'T
use it in the ORDER BY clause.
And JDBC drivers don't necessarily implement those methods correctly.
(MySQL's driver used to return null for getIdentifierQuoteString(), when the
correct answer should have been "`".)
